Get up close (almost within touching distance!) to the wreck of the ‘Sugar Boat,’ Laden with East African sugar and bound for the Tate & Lyle refinery in Greenock, the MV Captayannis earned its nickname the “Sugar Boat.” Strong winds in 1974 caused it to break free and collide with a BP tanker, tearing a hole in its hull. The captain beached the ship on a sandbar, where it toppled into its resting place. Salvage efforts were abandoned due to ownership disputes and the wreck was left to rust near Ardmore Point bird sanctuary. The rusting hulk protrudes from the water and is now a haven for fish and seabirds.
